Direct answer

VALR is cheaper on every published number (0.35 % taker against 0.60 %, free EFT against 0.5 %, 30 free withdrawals against R16 + 0.5 %); AltCoinTrader is the one that takes Capitec Pay, Absa Pay, cards and cash and lets you deposit before full verification. Both are FSCA-licensed South African companies.

The table above this text renders the verified fields for both platforms with their sources and dates; the body below explains what the differences mean in rand. Both fee schedules were re-read on 7 September 2026. We hold no affiliate agreement with either platform and have not opened an account at either.

Who each platform suits

VALR suits anyone who can fund by ordinary EFT and wants the lowest verified cost: free deposits, 0.18 % / 0.35 % on rand pairs, a 1.6 % one-tap buy, 30 free normal withdrawals a month and perpetual futures through a group entity for those who want them.

AltCoinTrader suits a Capitec or Absa customer, anyone who needs a card or cash route into crypto, and anyone who wants to try the platform before sending FICA documents (deposits and trading are allowed at Level 1; withdrawals beyond a once-off R100 are not).

Fees compared

Exchange trading

At the entry tier VALR charges 0.18 % maker / 0.35 % taker on fiat-quoted pairs such as BTC/ZAR, with nine tiers measured in USDT and 0.08 % / 0.10 % on crypto-quoted pairs. AltCoinTrader charges 0.50 % / 0.60 % on every pair at Tier 1 (R0–R100,000 of 30-day volume), falling to 0.40 % / 0.50 % above R100,000 and 0.20 % / 0.30 % above R1 million.

Worked examples on a R10,000 taker order at the entry tier (assumptions, not quotes): VALR R35; AltCoinTrader R60. As a maker: VALR R18; AltCoinTrader R50.

One-tap buying

VALR’s Simple Buy/Sell/Swap costs 1.6 %. AltCoinTrader lists an “Easy Buy” product but publishes no separate fee for it, so its instant-buy cost is unknown and not compared.

Deposits

VALR: EFT free with no minimum (up to 48 hours to clear); South African card 3.9 %. AltCoinTrader: EFT 0.5 % capped at R95 (Standard Bank to Standard Bank within 24 hours inside cut-off times, other banks up to 72 hours); Capitec Pay via Stitch 2 % capped at R95; Absa Pay 2.5 %; cards 5 % local or 7 % international; cash the 0.5 % plus an additional 5 %. On a R10,000 EFT the difference is R0 against R50; on R20,000 it is R0 against R95 (the cap).

Withdrawals

VALR: the first 30 normal withdrawals in a calendar month are free for individual clients, then R8.50 each; a fast RTC withdrawal costs R30. AltCoinTrader: R16 + 0.5 % with the 0.5 % capped at R95 (R66 on R10,000, R111 on R20,000), plus R60 for near-instant processing or R140 above R100,000. Both pay only to a bank account in your own name.

Round trip on R10,000 (assumptions, not quotes)

EFT in, one taker buy and one taker sell, one normal withdrawal, ignoring spread and price movement: VALR about R70 (R0 + R35 + R35 + R0 within the free allowance); AltCoinTrader about R236 (R50 + R60 + R60 + R66). The fee calculator has verified presets for both.

Deposits and withdrawals compared

If you bank with Standard Bank, FNB, Nedbank, Investec or TymeBank and can wait a day or two, VALR’s free EFT wins outright. If you bank with Capitec or Absa, AltCoinTrader’s Capitec Pay (max R95) and Absa Pay (2.5 %) are rails VALR does not have; VALR’s alternative is a 3.9 % card deposit. AltCoinTrader is also the only one of the two that accepts cash.

KYC compared

VALR allows no deposit or trade until you are fully verified with a government-issued ID plus tax information; verification unlocks a 0.2 BTC daily crypto withdrawal limit, raised to 100 BTC with authenticator 2FA. AltCoinTrader lets Level 1 accounts deposit and trade, then requires proof of identity, proof of residence, a selfie holding the ID with a handwritten note and a verified cellphone number before withdrawals beyond R100; Level 2 allows R200,000 per 24 hours and Level 3 (2FA for a month) R1,000,000.

Products compared

VALR’s schedule covers spot, perpetual futures (provided by VALR DAM, FSP 54897 per VALR), spot margin, staking, earn and OTC. AltCoinTrader publishes spot trading, an Easy Save staking account (in maintenance when checked) and an Easy Buy product; no futures or margin.

Licensing compared

Both appear in Section A of the FSCA’s December 2025 list: VALR (PTY) LTD at entry 270 (FSP 53308, Category I & II) and ALTCOIN TRADER (PTY) LTD at entry 15 (FSP 53614, Category I & II). Both are verified only to that list.

Limitations of this comparison

AltCoinTrader does not currently publish a minimum withdrawal and its Easy Buy fee is unpublished, so neither is compared. Spreads are not published by either platform. Fee tiers fall with volume and both schedules can change without notice. This compares published data, not account experience.
