The three steps
Selling USDT for rand takes three moves. First, get the USDT onto a platform that buys it for rand, on a network that platform lists. Second, sell it, either on a USDT/ZAR order book or at a quoted price. Third, withdraw the rand to your bank account. The table above prices the second and third steps on every platform where the published fees allow it.
Where you can sell USDT for rand
AltCoinTrader, Luno and VALR, all FSCA-licensed South African companies, run USDT/ZAR order books. Binance, an offshore platform, lists the pair too, at its global standard rate rather than a South Africa schedule. Ovex and Bitget buy USDT from you at a quoted price instead. Below, platforms are grouped by how they price a sale, then listed fully verified before partially verified and by name.
| Platform | How you sell | USDT deposit networks | Rand payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| AltCoinTrader | USDT/ZAR order book | Nine, including Tron, Ethereum and Solana; credited from Level 2 | To your registered bank account, in weekday batches or near-instant for a fee |
| Luno | USDT/ZAR order book, or the Portfolio screen | Ethereum and Tron (Tron for customers verified in South Africa or Nigeria) | Normal (free) or same-day express |
| VALR | USDT/ZAR order book, or Simple Sell | Ethereum, Tron and Solana | Normal (30 free a month for individuals) or fast |
| Binance | USDT/ZAR order book, or Convert | 19 on its global list | Bank transfer, linked bank account or Absa Pay; fee shown in the app |
| Ovex | Quoted price (request for quote) | Ethereum and Tron, from 10 USDT | R60 a withdrawal, from R100 |
| Bitget | Quoted price, through its rand balance | 12 on its global list | Bank transfer from the rand balance |
Step 1: get the USDT onto the platform
Send USDT only on a network the receiving platform lists for USDT, and copy the deposit address from that platform’s own screen. VALR says USDT sent over any other network is lost, and Luno warns never to send USDT to your Luno Ethereum (ETH) wallet. If it has already happened, see USDT sent on the wrong network.
Expect Travel Rule questions on the way in. Luno asks for the name of the platform the USDT came from, and AltCoinTrader says transactions in every coin need its Travel Rule questions. AltCoinTrader also credits crypto deposits only once your account is verified to Level 2. Ovex’s minimum USDT deposit is 10 USDT on each network.
Step 2: sell on the order book or at a quote
On an order book, a market order sells at once at the best price on offer and pays the taker fee. A limit order names your price and waits, and if it fills you pay the maker rate instead. At Luno, a Tier 1 maker on USDT/ZAR earns a 0.01 % rebate, so a filled limit order costs nothing in fees. The one-tap screens cost more: 1.6 % on VALR’s Simple Buy, Sell and Swap, and 2 % on Luno’s Portfolio screen.
Binance trades USDT/ZAR on its order book at the global standard rate, which its pages do not confirm for the rand pair. Its South Africa page says the one-tap Convert screen charges no fee, but the spread inside a Convert quote is not published.
Ovex and Bitget have no USDT/ZAR order book. Ovex charges 0 % of trade value and builds its cost into the quoted price, and its record book shows an indicative spread for each past trade. Bitget sells USDT for rand in the app at a rate shown before you confirm. We did not measure any platform’s spread. To compare a quote with the market, check the public order book first: Luno’s USDT/ZAR market, VALR’s USDT/ZAR market, AltCoinTrader’s Tether market or Binance’s USDT/ZAR market.
Step 3: get the rand out
- AltCoinTrader charges R16 + 0.5 % per withdrawal, with the 0.5 % capped at R95. It pays to your registered bank account in batches at 09:00, 13:00 and 16:00 on weekdays, and a withdrawal not confirmed by its e-mail link by 15:00 moves to the next working day. Near-instant processing adds R60, or R140 above R100,000.
- Luno pays normal withdrawals free, within up to two business days, and same-day express withdrawals for R20.00 to a bank on real-time clearing or R80.00 to any other. The account must be your own.
- VALR gives individual clients 30 free normal withdrawals per calendar month, then R8.50 each, and fast withdrawals for R30. It pays only to a South African bank account in your own name.
- Binance pays to an account in your own name by bank transfer, to a linked bank account or through Absa Pay. Its fee appears on the withdrawal screen, and an order placed outside banking hours is processed the next business day.
- Ovex charges R60 per rand withdrawal, from R100, and needs full verification (Level 3) according to its verification-levels page; its withdrawal FAQ separately allows USD 300 before KYC.
- Bitget pays the rand balance to an account in your own name. Its pages give different times: one working day in its Help Center, up to two business days in its South Africa guide. Each withdrawal costs a flat 20 ZAR (Help Center). Bitget paused withdrawals after a security incident on 24 September 2026; the dated notice at the top of this page shows the latest status we have read.
Selling to another person (P2P)
Binance’s South Africa page lists P2P trading in rand, and Bitget’s P2P marketplace showed one rand advert on 4 October 2026. On P2P you sell USDT to another user, who pays rand into your bank account, and the platform holds the USDT until you release it.
Both platforms’ own warnings come down to one rule: release the USDT only once the rand is in your bank account. Binance’s P2P scam guide describes doctored payment screenshots, fake bank SMS messages, chargebacks and third-party payments. It asks you to check that the payer’s name matches their verified name and to keep every message on the platform. Bitget’s fraud guide adds rapid orders for identical amounts and fake receipts. It calls your receiving account’s status the only proof that you have been paid.
Tax and records
Selling USDT for rand is a transaction to keep for SARS: note the date, the rand amount and the fees, and download your history before you file. Crypto tax in South Africa explains how SARS treats gains and where each platform’s export is.
Limitations of this guide
The table and figures use published entry-tier fees; tiers fall with volume, spreads were not measured and a limit order may not fill. Binance’s rand withdrawal fee and every platform’s spread are unpublished, and Bitget’s rand withdrawal fee comes from its Help Center Callpay withdrawal article of 10 February 2025. This compares published data, not account experience: we have not opened accounts at these platforms.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to sell USDT for rand?
On published fees, a limit order on Luno's USDT/ZAR order book, where Tier 1 makers earn a 0.01 % rebate and normal withdrawals are free; a limit order may not fill at once. As a taker, Luno charges 0.20 %, VALR 0.35 % and AltCoinTrader 0.60 %. Ovex and Bitget quote a price with an unpublished spread, so their cost cannot be compared.
How long does it take to get rand after selling USDT?
A market order sells at once; the wait is the withdrawal. Luno's normal withdrawal takes up to two business days and its express option is same-day. VALR's fast withdrawal is near-instant to banks on real-time clearing. AltCoinTrader pays in three weekday batches, or near-instant for an extra fee.
How do I cash out USDT on Bitget?
Not on an order book: Bitget has no USDT/ZAR pair, so you sell USDT for rand in the app at a quote whose spread it does not publish, then withdraw the rand to a bank account in your own name. Each rand withdrawal costs a flat 20 ZAR, according to its Help Center.
Will I be asked Travel Rule questions when I receive USDT?
Often, yes. Luno asks which platform the USDT came from when you receive from another exchange, and AltCoinTrader says transactions in every coin need its Travel Rule questions and credits crypto deposits only from Level 2. Have the sending platform's name ready before you send.
How we compare
