Direct answer
The cheapest verified way to buy USDT with rand is on the order book of an FSCA-licensed exchange that quotes a USDT/ZAR pair. Luno charges 0.20 % as a taker and pays makers a 0.01 % rebate on USDT/ZAR and USDC/ZAR at its entry tier, the lowest rand-pair rate we verified anywhere. VALR treats USDT/ZAR as a fiat-quoted pair at 0.18 % maker / 0.35 % taker. Binance offers ZAR deposits by Instant EFT or bank transfer, spot trading at 0.10 % and peer-to-peer trading in rand, but it is not on the FSCA’s December 2025 licence list and its rand deposit fee is not published. Whichever platform you use, decide which blockchain network you will send the USDT over before you buy, because the withdrawal fee ranges from about 2 USDT to more than 8 USDT depending on the network.

Who this guide is for
South Africans who want a rand-priced way into a dollar stablecoin: to hold a dollar balance on an exchange, to move value to another platform or wallet, or to trade crypto/crypto pairs that are quoted in USDT. It assumes you have a South African bank account in your own name and can complete identity verification. It is not for anyone hoping to earn a yield on USDT; that is a separate product with separate terms and is not covered.
What USDT is, briefly
USDT (Tether) is a token issued by a private company that aims to trade at one US dollar. It is not issued or backed by any government, it is not rand, and its value depends on the issuer honouring redemptions. The issuer publishes its own reserve and redemption disclosures; read those directly rather than relying on an exchange’s description. On South African exchanges USDT is simply another crypto asset with a rand price, and it falls under the same FSCA licensing and FICA verification rules as bitcoin.
Step 1: pick a platform with a USDT/ZAR market
- Luno (Pty) Ltd (FSP 53314, entry 166 on the FSCA December 2025 list) runs a USDT/ZAR pair in its cheapest pair class: 0.20 % taker and a −0.01 % maker rebate at Tier 1 (R0–R20,000 of 30-day volume), against 0.60 % taker on BTC/ZAR. Buying from the Portfolio screen instead costs 2 %.
- VALR (Pty) Ltd (FSP 53308, entry 270) quotes USDTZAR as a fiat pair at 0.18 % maker / 0.35 % taker at Tier 1, with nine volume tiers; stablecoin-to-stablecoin pairs cost 0.05 % / 0.10 %. Simple Buy/Sell/Swap costs 1.6 %.
- Binance states on its South Africa page that users can deposit ZAR via Instant EFT or bank transfer, trade spot at 0.10 % / 0.10 % (0.075 % with BNB), and trade peer-to-peer with other South African users using ZAR. Binance is absent from the FSCA list and describes its licence application as in process.
- AltCoinTrader (FSP 53614) and Ovex (FSP 53922) list USDT for withdrawal, but we did not verify a USDT/ZAR order-book pair or an instant USDT quote at either, so they appear below only for their network fees.
Step 2: fund the account
An ordinary EFT is free at both Luno and VALR. Luno’s instant rails cost 1.4 % (Stitch or Absa Pay), 1.25 % or R9.00 (Capitec Pay) and 2.5 % (Apple Pay); VALR’s card route costs 3.9 %. Binance lists Instant EFT and bank transfer with no minimum, but the fee is unknown. If your plan is to hold USDT as a dollar balance, remember that every deposit fee is a permanent loss against that balance: 1.4 % on R20,000 is R280 before you own a single USDT.
Step 3: place the order
On Luno, choose the USDT/ZAR market on the Exchange and place a limit order slightly below the best ask if you want the maker rebate, or a market order if you want the fill now at 0.20 %. On VALR, the same choice on USDTZAR costs 0.18 % or 0.35 %. On Binance spot the rate is 0.10 % either way; on Binance P2P you deal directly with another user, and Binance’s page does not publish a fee for South African P2P trades, so check the order screen.
Worked example (assumptions, not a quote)
Assume R10,000 of USDT bought with a single order at the entry tier, ignoring spread and price movement:
- Luno taker: 0.20 % × R10,000 = R20. Luno maker: rebate of 0.01 % = R1 back. Luno Portfolio screen: 2 % = R200.
- VALR taker: 0.35 % × R10,000 = R35. VALR maker: 0.18 % = R18. VALR Simple Buy: 1.6 % = R160.
- Binance spot taker: 0.10 % = R10 (deposit fee unknown).
The fee calculator reproduces these lines for any amount.
Step 4: choose the network before you withdraw
USDT exists on many blockchains, and a transfer only works if the sending platform and the receiving wallet or platform both support the network you pick. The fee is set per network by the platform. AltCoinTrader publishes 2 USDT on Arbitrum, Avalanche, NEAR, Optimism, Solana and TON, 5 USDT on Tron (TRC20), and dynamic fees on Ethereum (ERC20, about 8.56 USDT when read) and BNB Smart Chain (about 4.24 USDT). Ovex charges 8.0 USDT on Ethereum. Luno charges a dynamic send fee shown at confirmation, VALR quotes a network-dependent fee before you confirm, and Binance says its fees are dynamic and paid to the network. Sending on the wrong network, or to an address without the memo some networks need, is usually unrecoverable. Our cheapest network for sending USDT guide compares the published figures.
Availability limitations
Rand deposits and withdrawals at the licensed platforms work only with a South African bank account in your own name. Luno’s ZAR wallet accepts rand only from a South African bank account, and VALR requires deposits from an account registered in your name. Binance’s South African users contract with Binance ADGM entities in Abu Dhabi; which Binance products beyond spot, Earn and P2P are available to South African residents is not confirmed on an official page.
KYC considerations
Luno’s Level 1 caps lifetime deposits and withdrawals at R15,000 and Level 2 at R50,000 a month, so a larger USDT purchase needs full verification. VALR requires full verification (government ID plus tax information) before any deposit or trade. Binance requires a government ID plus a liveness check before deposits and trading. Luno’s send limits also apply when you withdraw USDT: USD 2,400 per 24 hours at Level 1, USD 12,000 at Level 2 and USD 120,000 at Level 3. Documents and limits are in our KYC guide.
Risks
A stablecoin is only as stable as its issuer: USDT can trade below one dollar and redemption depends on the issuer’s terms, not on any South African law. Holding USDT on an exchange adds the exchange as a counterparty; an FSCA licence sets conduct standards but does not insure balances. USDT/ZAR also moves with the rand-dollar rate, so a rand-denominated gain or loss can arise even when USDT holds its dollar value, and SARS applies normal income tax rules to crypto assets. Fees were verified on 6 September 2026 and change without notice.
Next steps
If you also want bitcoin, the steps in how to buy Bitcoin with ZAR are the same up to the pair you choose. The full Luno schedule, including the USDT/ZAR class, is in Luno fees explained, and the exchange finder filters platforms by deposit rail and licence status.
How we compare
We compare availability, licensing, fees, deposit and withdrawal methods and KYC requirements using official exchange documentation and regulator registers. Affiliate relationships never affect ranking or wording.
Risk warning
Crypto assets are volatile and you may lose all the money you put in. Platform availability, fees, licences and terms can change at any time and the information on this page may become outdated.
