How to withdraw USDT in South Africa: networks, fees and minimums by exchange

Who this guide is for

You hold USDT on a South African exchange and want to send it to a wallet, another exchange, or another person, without paying more than necessary and without losing it to a network mismatch. Every network, fee and minimum below was read on the platforms’ official pages between 27 September and 3 October 2026. Network fees are re-checked on a 30-day window, and a network that is not listed for a platform is unknown, not unsupported.

Network support matrix

“Yes” means the platform’s own page lists the network for USDT deposits and withdrawals. A dash means the network is not on that platform’s page, which is not the same as “unsupported”.

Binance is not in the matrix: it publishes a platform-wide USDT network table (19 networks with flat fees such as 1.5 USDT on Tron and 0.9 USDT on Ethereum when read on 4 October 2026). That table is global rather than South Africa-specific, and the entity is not on the FSCA’s March 2026 list of licensed providers.

Bitget is likewise outside the matrix: its public coins endpoint lists 12 USDT chains with fixed fees from 0.01 USDT (BNB Smart Chain and Morph) to 2 USDT (Ethereum), including 0.5 USDT on Solana and 1.5 USDT on Tron, and a 10 USDT minimum (read 3 October 2026). That list is also global rather than South Africa-specific. Bitget’s FSCA licence is held by group subsidiary Parsa Financial Services (FSP 52563), not the operator its terms name, so the company holding your account is unconfirmed; see is Bitget legal in South Africa?. Fees and minimums by network

Ovex’s withdrawal FAQ says only Bitcoin and ERC-20 withdrawals clear, which conflicts with its fee page and crypto-withdrawal article; confirm Tron on Ovex’s withdrawal screen before using it.

Which network is cheapest

On a South African fee table, the lowest verified fee at the time of our last check is 2 USDT at AltCoinTrader on Arbitrum, Avalanche, NEAR, Optimism, Solana or TON. There is not enough verified data to rank every network across all platforms, because half of the cells in the table are variable by design. At Ovex the cheaper rail is Tron, if a Tron withdrawal clears (see the note under the table). Luno and VALR quote their fees on the confirmation screen, so compare the networks there; a withdrawal to another VALR account is free. Binance’s and Bitget’s global tables, described under the matrix, go as low as 0.01 USDT on BNB Smart Chain, but neither is South Africa-specific.

The fee reflects the network’s transaction cost plus, at some platforms, a margin: VALR’s charges article says its fee can exceed the network cost. A fixed fee also stays the same whatever the amount, and Ovex says its flat fee is unchanged whether you withdraw $100 or $100 million. A 2 USDT fee, for example, is 2 % of a 100 USDT send but 0.1 % of a 2,000 USDT send. Batching several small sends into one is the single biggest saving on any network.

A cheap network only helps if the receiver supports it: USDT on one network is a different token from USDT on another, and a transfer on a network the receiver does not support is lost. Of the four South African platforms, only AltCoinTrader lists Arbitrum, Avalanche, NEAR, Optimism and TON, and only AltCoinTrader and VALR list Solana. Before using a less common network, check the issuer’s own documentation for the networks USDT officially exists on; exchanges add and remove networks over time.

TRC-20 vs ERC-20 for South African users

• Cost: where a fixed fee is published, Tron is cheaper than Ethereum (5 vs 8.0 USDT at Ovex; 5 USDT vs a variable fee of about 8.9 USDT at AltCoinTrader when re-read on 27 September 2026). At Luno and VALR both are variable and the confirmation screen is the only reliable comparison.
• Speed: Luno describes Tron as the faster of its two USDT networks and Ethereum as the one supported by more platforms and wallets.
• Availability: every platform above lists Ethereum; Tron is listed at all four but Luno limits it to South Africa- and Nigeria-verified customers on app version 8.77.0 or higher and warns it may be temporarily unavailable.
• Address rules: on Luno a USDT-on-Tron receive address must be created inside the USDT wallet first; sending USDT to the TRX or ETH wallet address loses it. VALR requires the network chosen on VALR to match the network on the receiving platform.

Steps

1. On the receiving wallet or exchange, open the USDT deposit screen and note which networks it accepts and whether a memo or tag is required. This decides everything that follows.
2. On the sending platform, open the USDT wallet and choose withdraw / send, then select a network the receiver listed. On Luno, create the Tron receive address first if you plan to use Tron.
3. Paste the receiver’s address for that network. Addresses are network-specific; an Ethereum address will not receive Tron USDT.
4. Read the fee and minimum on the confirmation screen. At VALR and Luno this is the only place the fee exists; at AltCoinTrader and Ovex it should match the fixed table above.
5. For a large amount, send a small test first; the second fee is cheaper than an irreversible loss.
6. Confirm with 2FA and wait for the confirmations the receiver requires (Luno needs 30 on Ethereum, about 15 minutes, for incoming USDT).

KYC and limits

Withdrawals sit inside each platform’s verification limits: Luno caps sends at USD 2,400 per 24 hours at Level 1, USD 12,000 at Level 2 and USD 120,000 at Level 3. AltCoinTrader allows R100 (or the crypto equivalent) in total until FICA documents are verified, then R200,000 per 24 hours at Level 2 and R1,000,000 at Level 3. VALR requires full verification before any crypto withdrawal, and Ovex’s pages differ on whether an unverified account can withdraw up to USD 300 in total. VALR also offers an optional setting that limits crypto withdrawals to addresses in your address book, with a 24-hour wait for new ones, and no platform allows a withdrawal below its minimum or below the fee.

Common mistakes

• Wrong network. The single unrecoverable mistake. VALR: “Deposits via other networks will result in permanent loss of your crypto.” Luno: USDT sent to an ETH or TRX wallet address is lost.
• Right network, wrong address type. Some networks need a memo or tag; some receivers issue a different address per network.
• Below the minimum. Ovex, and Luno on Tron, refuse below 10 USDT; VALR refuses below roughly three times the fee.
• Expecting a fixed fee at VALR or Luno. There is none; the screen fee moves with the network.
• Sending from Luno on Tron during an outage. Luno warns Tron may be temporarily unavailable; use Ethereum or wait.
• A transfer that seems stuck is usually confirmations, not loss: see common causes of a pending withdrawal.

Limitations and unresolved questions

• AltCoinTrader publishes no USDT minimum withdrawal; VALR publishes a rule (three times the fee) rather than a figure.
• Luno’s own article is internally inconsistent about the Tron fee (dynamic vs fixed $3–$12); we do not resolve that on Luno’s behalf.
• Binance’s USDT network fees are published platform-wide only (global scope); whether every network is offered to South African users is not confirmed.
• Networks are added, paused and removed without notice; the matrix reflects the pages on the dates in its caption.
• We have not opened accounts or sent USDT on any platform.
