Blank bank cards in muted colours fanned out on a linen surface beside small brass keys

Direct answer

Every South African bank we could check can fund at least three licensed exchanges by ordinary EFT (VALR, AltCoinTrader and Ovex accept EFTs from any bank, and Luno from every bank except Capitec and Absa). The differences between banks are speed, the instant rails they can use, and two Luno-specific restrictions: Capitec and Absa customers must use Capitec Pay or Absa Pay there.

Standard Bank is the fastest for ordinary EFTs because Luno, VALR and AltCoinTrader all bank there. Absa is the most restricted. Capitec has its own page: how to buy crypto with Capitec. All figures were read on the exchanges’ official pages on 7 September 2026; each exchange’s data profile shows the verification and re-check date for every fee.

Binance offers “Instant EFT or bank transfer” through Stitch but publishes neither a bank list nor a rand deposit fee, and it is not on the FSCA’s December 2025 licence list, so it is left out of the matrix rather than guessed.

How long an EFT takes, by bank

  • Standard Bank to any of the three exchanges that bank there: Luno says near-instantly, VALR near immediate, AltCoinTrader within 24 hours when made inside Standard Bank’s cut-off times (longer than 48 hours outside them). Luno adds that Standard Bank withdrawals reflect in about 15 minutes during banking hours, so the express option is not even offered.
  • Every other bank: an interbank EFT. VALR says up to 48 business hours, Luno up to two business days (longer over weekends and public holidays), AltCoinTrader up to 72 hours. Ovex does not publish a time.
  • Instant rails (Luno’s Stitch deposit, Capitec Pay, Absa Pay) reflect within minutes because the payment is approved inside the exchange flow; the trade-off is the fee.

If you deposit regularly and speed matters, Luno’s bank-transfer article suggests opening a Standard Bank account for Luno deposits; that is Luno’s suggestion, not ours, and the same logic applies to VALR and AltCoinTrader.

Bank by bank

FNB

Nothing is blocked. EFT to all four licensed exchanges (free except AltCoinTrader’s 0.5 %), or use Luno’s instant deposit through Stitch at 1.4 %, which needs you to sign in to FNB online banking inside the Luno flow. Luno’s instant-deposit article warns to finish the payment in the Luno app rather than EFTing to the Stitch beneficiary that appears in your banking app, and that the recipient shows as “LPL” on your statement. Withdrawals: Luno express R20.00, VALR fast R30, because FNB is a real-time-clearing participant.

Absa

The most restricted bank on the pages we read, and the restriction comes from Absa’s side according to Luno: “Absa has restricted crypto-related payments made via third-party open banking services (like Stitch LinkPay) and cards.” In practice:

  • Luno: no ordinary EFT and no card purchases for Absa customers. Use Absa Pay: 1.4 %, up to R100,000 per transaction, no account linking; you approve each deposit by push notification in the Absa app (one tap after the first). Absa’s own site describes Absa Pay as paying an online merchant directly from your Absa account with approval in the banking app.
  • AltCoinTrader: Absa Pay via Stitch at 2.5 % (no cap published), or an ordinary EFT to its Standard Bank or Nedbank account at 0.5 % capped at R95 (up to 72 hours).
  • VALR and Ovex: a free ordinary EFT from Absa works; VALR also takes a South African card at 3.9 %.

Withdrawals to Absa: Luno express R20.00 (Absa is an RTC participant), VALR fast R30, normal withdrawals free at both.

Standard Bank

The fastest bank for ordinary EFTs, for a structural reason: Luno, VALR and AltCoinTrader hold Standard Bank accounts, so your transfer never leaves the bank. Luno: near-instant deposits and roughly 15-minute withdrawals. VALR: near immediate deposits. AltCoinTrader: credited within 24 hours inside cut-off times, and its deposit article specifically prefers its Standard Bank account. Ovex: free EFT, time not published. Standard Bank customers can also use Luno’s Stitch instant deposit at 1.4 %, but with near-instant free EFTs there is little reason to pay for it.

Nedbank

EFT everywhere; Luno’s instant deposit through Stitch at 1.4 %; and AltCoinTrader lets you pay into its own Nedbank account, which avoids an interbank hop (AltCoinTrader publishes a same-bank timing only for Standard Bank, so treat Nedbank-to-Nedbank as “up to 72 hours” until you have seen it yourself). Nedbank is an RTC participant for express and fast withdrawals.

TymeBank, Investec and Discovery

TymeBank and Investec appear on Luno’s Stitch instant-deposit list; Discovery Bank does not, but all three can EFT to every platform and all three are RTC participants for express withdrawals. Investec and Discovery customers should check their bank’s own daily EFT limits, which none of the exchanges publish.

Capitec

Capitec cannot EFT to Luno and has its own rail, Capitec Pay, at Luno (1.25 % up to R1,000, flat R9 above) and AltCoinTrader (2 % capped at R95); VALR and Ovex take a free EFT. The full walkthrough, worked examples and troubleshooting are in how to buy crypto with Capitec.

What the rails cost at R10,000 (assumptions, not quotes)

  • Ordinary EFT: R0 at VALR, Luno and Ovex; R50 at AltCoinTrader.
  • Luno instant deposit via Stitch (FNB, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank, TymeBank): R140.
  • Absa Pay: R140 at Luno; R250 at AltCoinTrader.
  • Capitec Pay: R9 at Luno; R95 at AltCoinTrader (cap).
  • Card: R390 at VALR; R500 at AltCoinTrader; not available for Absa cards at Luno.

Add the trading fee for the pair you buy: at the entry tier, 0.35 % at VALR on BTC/ZAR or USDT/ZAR, 0.60 % at Luno on BTC/ZAR but 0.20 % on USDT/ZAR, 0.60 % at AltCoinTrader on every pair. The fee calculator combines both from the same verified schedule.

Steps for an ordinary EFT (any bank)

  1. Verify your account first where the platform requires it (VALR and Ovex before any deposit; Luno before an EFT; AltCoinTrader lets you deposit unverified but caps withdrawals at R100 until FICA approval).
  2. In the exchange app, open the ZAR wallet, choose Deposit, then bank transfer / EFT, and select your bank where asked (VALR).
  3. Copy the exchange’s account details and your unique reference: VR-prefixed at VALR, BX or LN at Luno, a nine-digit number at AltCoinTrader.
  4. In your banking app, add the exchange as a beneficiary (AltCoinTrader advises against once-off payments) and pay from an account in your own name with the reference exactly as shown and nothing added.
  5. Tell the app you have paid (Luno has an “I’ve made the deposit” button) and wait for the confirmation e-mail.

KYC implications

Own-name accounts are the rule everywhere: VALR, Luno and Ovex say so on their deposit pages, and AltCoinTrader pays withdrawals only to the registered account. Limits follow the verification level, not the bank: Luno Level 1 R15,000 lifetime, Level 2 R50,000 per month; AltCoinTrader withdrawals R100 once-off until FICA, then R200,000 or R1,000,000 per 24 hours; VALR and Ovex need full verification before any deposit. The KYC guide lists the documents.

Troubleshooting by bank

  • Absa or Capitec EFT to Luno not credited: Luno does not accept it; contact Luno support with proof of payment and switch to Absa Pay or Capitec Pay.
  • Absa card declined at Luno: card purchases are not currently available for Absa customers; use Absa Pay.
  • Stitch instant deposit stuck at Luno: you may have paid the Stitch beneficiary directly from your banking app instead of completing the flow in Luno; Luno says this delays crediting.
  • Interbank EFT slow at VALR or AltCoinTrader: up to 48 business hours or 72 hours is normal; check the reference and the own-name rule before contacting support. VALR asks you to wait 48 hours first.
  • Cross-border EFT from Namibia, eSwatini or Lesotho: VALR no longer processes these through the South African EFT system; only SWIFT deposits are possible and no fiat withdrawals to those countries.
  • Withdrawal delayed: see common causes of a pending withdrawal.

Limitations of this guide

Bank support is described as the exchanges describe it. Apart from Absa’s generic Absa Pay page, no bank publishes a page we could read about payments to crypto exchanges, so a rail that works today can be restricted by a bank without notice, as Absa’s third-party rails were. We have not opened accounts or made deposits; every number comes from the sources listed below on the date shown, and fee figures are re-checked on a 30-day window.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy crypto with FNB?

Yes, on every platform we have verified. FNB customers can EFT to VALR (free), Luno (free), AltCoinTrader (0.5 % capped at R95) and Ovex (free), or use Luno's instant deposit through Stitch at 1.4 %. An EFT from FNB takes up to 48 business hours at VALR and up to two business days at Luno; FNB is an RTC bank, so express withdrawals from Luno cost R20.00.

Can I buy crypto with Absa?

Yes, but not by EFT to Luno: Luno states Absa customers must use Absa Pay (1.4 %, approved in the Absa app, up to R100,000 per deposit) and cannot currently buy with an Absa card. AltCoinTrader offers Absa Pay at 2.5 % or an EFT at 0.5 %; VALR and Ovex accept a free EFT from Absa.

Which bank is fastest for crypto deposits in South Africa?

Standard Bank, because Luno, VALR and AltCoinTrader all hold Standard Bank accounts: Luno says a Standard Bank EFT reflects near-instantly, VALR says near immediate, and AltCoinTrader credits within 24 hours inside cut-off times. From any other bank an ordinary EFT is interbank and takes up to 48 to 72 hours.

Does Nedbank work with crypto exchanges?

Yes. Nedbank customers can EFT to all four licensed platforms, use Luno's Stitch instant deposit at 1.4 %, and pay into AltCoinTrader's own Nedbank account. Nedbank is an RTC participant, so a Luno express withdrawal costs R20.00 and a VALR fast withdrawal R30.

Which South African banks block crypto exchanges?

On the official pages we read, only two restrictions are published, both by Luno: Capitec and Absa accounts cannot send an ordinary EFT to Luno, and Absa cards cannot buy there. Luno attributes the Absa change to Absa restricting crypto-related payments over third-party open-banking rails and cards. No bank publishes a general ban on the four licensed exchanges.
