USDT/ZAR fees compared: VALR, Luno, AltCoinTrader and Ovex
Verified USDT/ZAR trading fees at VALR, Luno, AltCoinTrader and Ovex, plus the rand deposit and USDT withdrawal costs behind the real price of Tether.
Key facts (verified 7 September 2026)
- Entry-tier USDT/ZAR taker fees: 0.20 % at Luno (makers get a 0.01 % rebate), 0.35 % at VALR (0.18 % maker), 0.60 % at AltCoinTrader (0.50 % maker); Ovex quotes a price with its spread inside.
- Luno's 0.20 % is the lowest verified USDT/ZAR taker fee; on general crypto/ZAR pairs such as BTC/ZAR the order reverses and VALR's 0.35 % is lowest, so the pair class matters.
- The rand deposit is free by EFT at VALR, Luno and Ovex and 0.5 % (capped at R95) at AltCoinTrader; getting USDT out costs a fixed 2 to 8 USDT at AltCoinTrader and Ovex and a variable, on-screen fee at VALR and Luno.

Direct answer
Buying Tether with rand on the order book costs, at the entry tier, 0.20 % as a taker at Luno (with a 0.01 % maker rebate), 0.35 % at VALR (0.18 % maker), and 0.60 % at AltCoinTrader (0.50 % maker). Ovex has no order book: its USDT/ZAR price is a quote that already contains the spread, so there is no maker or taker rate to compare.
That ranking applies to the stablecoin/ZAR pair class only. On general crypto/ZAR pairs such as BTC/ZAR, VALR’s 0.35 % is the lowest verified taker fee and Luno’s is 0.60 %; we never describe either platform as cheapest for “all ZAR pairs”. Every figure was read on the platforms’ official pages on 7 September 2026 and is re-checked on a 30-day window; the exchange profiles show the exact re-check date.
Who this guide is for
You want the full cost of turning rand into USDT and, usually, moving that USDT somewhere else, and you want the numbers with their sources rather than a marketing claim. If you have not chosen a platform yet, start with the parent guide, how to buy USDT in South Africa; if you already hold USDT and want it out, see how to withdraw USDT in South Africa.
USDT/ZAR trading fees (entry tier, verified 7 September 2026)
| Exchange | Pricing model | USDT/ZAR maker | USDT/ZAR taker | Pair class on that platform | BTC/ZAR taker for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luno | Order book | −0.01 % (rebate) | 0.20 % | “USDT/ZAR and USDC/ZAR” (cheapest class, Tier 1 R0–R20,000) | 0.60 % |
| VALR | Order book | 0.18 % | 0.35 % | Fiat-quoted pairs (Tier 1, 0 USDT 30-day volume) | 0.35 % |
| AltCoinTrader | Order book | 0.50 % | 0.60 % | All pairs (Tier 1, R0–R100,000) | 0.60 % |
| Ovex | Quote-based | Not applicable | Not applicable | Cost is the quoted spread | Not applicable |
| Binance | Order book | Not verified | 0.10 % stated | USDT/ZAR pair not confirmed on a page we could read; not on the FSCA list | 0.10 % stated |
Two things the table hides. First, tiers: Luno’s USDT/ZAR taker fee falls from 0.20 % at Tier 1 to 0.05 % at the top tier, VALR’s fiat-pair taker fee from 0.35 % to 0.13 % by Tier 3 (250,000 USDT of 30-day volume), so a high-volume trader’s ranking can differ. Second, the one-tap buy screens cost far more than the order book: 2 % at Luno’s Portfolio screen, 1.6 % for VALR’s Simple Buy, and AltCoinTrader’s Easy Buy fee is not published.
The rand deposit: the fee before the fee
The cheapest route into every platform is an ordinary EFT: free at VALR (up to 48 business hours), Luno (up to two business days; not possible from Capitec or Absa accounts) and Ovex (R98 minimum), and 0.5 % capped at R95 at AltCoinTrader. Instant rails cost more: 1.4 % for Luno’s Stitch instant deposit or Absa Pay, 1.25 % under R1,000 or a flat R9 above at Luno’s Capitec Pay, 2 % capped at R95 for AltCoinTrader’s Capitec Pay. Which rail your bank can use is covered in how to buy crypto with South African banks and how to buy crypto with Capitec.
The USDT withdrawal: the fee after the fee
If the USDT is going to a wallet or another platform, the withdrawal fee is part of the price of buying it:
- AltCoinTrader: fixed 2 USDT on Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Solana and TON, 5 USDT on Tron; variable on BNB Smart Chain and Ethereum. No USDT minimum is published.
- Ovex: flat 8.0 USDT on Ethereum or 5.0 USDT on Tron, minimum 10 USDT.
- Luno: dynamic send fee shown before you confirm on Ethereum or Tron; minimum 10 USDT per send.
- VALR: variable fee shown on the withdrawal screen for Ethereum, Tron or Solana (free to another VALR account); the minimum is generally three times that fee.

Worked totals on R10,000 (assumptions, not quotes)
One EFT deposit, one taker order on USDT/ZAR at the entry tier, then one withdrawal of the whole balance, ignoring spread and price movement. R10,000 is treated as about 555 USDT for the withdrawal line only, to show the fixed fees as a percentage; the actual rate is whatever the market shows.
| Exchange | Deposit | Trade | Withdrawal | Rand total before withdrawal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luno | R0 (EFT) | R20 (0.20 %) | variable, on screen | R20 |
| VALR | R0 (EFT) | R35 (0.35 %) | variable, on screen | R35 |
| AltCoinTrader | R50 (0.5 %) | R60 (0.60 %) | 2 USDT (≈0.36 %) on Solana or Arbitrum | R110 + 2 USDT |
| Ovex | R0 (EFT) | inside the quoted price | 5.0 USDT (≈0.9 %) on Tron | spread + 5 USDT |
On these numbers Luno is the cheapest verified route into USDT, and its withdrawal fee is the only unknown in the row; a Luno maker order at −0.01 % would earn R1 rather than cost R20. Put your own amount into the fee calculator; it uses the same verified schedule as this page, and the exchange finder ranks eligible platforms on the stablecoin/ZAR class.
Scope and limitations
- Fees are Tier 1 rates for order-book trades; volume tiers, promotions (Luno lists a 0.05 % taker promotion on its separate USDT/ZARU pair until 3 November 2026) and one-tap buy screens are not in the ranking.
- Spread is not a fee and is not measured here; on a thin order book it can exceed the fee.
- Binance’s rand deposit fee, USDT/ZAR pair and USDT withdrawal fees are not published on pages we could read, so it is excluded from the totals; it is also not on the FSCA’s December 2025 licence list.

Frequently asked questions
Which South African exchange has the lowest USDT/ZAR fee?
Luno, at 0.20 % taker and a 0.01 % maker rebate on USDT/ZAR and USDC/ZAR at Tier 1, verified on its fee page on 7 September 2026. VALR charges 0.35 % taker / 0.18 % maker on USDT/ZAR, AltCoinTrader 0.60 % / 0.50 %, and Ovex prices USDT/ZAR through a quote with the cost inside the spread. This ranking is for the stablecoin/ZAR class only.
Is USDT cheaper to buy than Bitcoin on the same exchange?
At Luno, yes: 0.20 % on USDT/ZAR against 0.60 % on BTC/ZAR. At VALR both are fiat-quoted pairs at 0.35 % taker, and at AltCoinTrader every pair costs 0.60 %. Ovex quotes both through a spread. The rand deposit and the crypto withdrawal fee are the same whichever coin you buy.
What does it cost to buy R10,000 of USDT and send it out?
Trading: R20 at Luno, R35 at VALR, R60 at AltCoinTrader (taker, entry tier). Deposit: free by EFT except R50 at AltCoinTrader. Withdrawal: a fixed 2 USDT on AltCoinTrader's cheapest networks or 5 USDT on Ovex's Tron rail, and a variable on-screen fee at Luno and VALR. Every figure is verified on the platforms' pages and changes without notice.
Does the maker rebate at Luno mean I get paid to buy USDT?
Only if your limit order rests on the book and is filled by someone else. Luno's Tier 1 maker rate on USDT/ZAR is −0.01 %, so a R10,000 maker order earns R1 instead of paying R20 as a taker. A market order, or a limit order that fills immediately, is a taker order and pays 0.20 %.
